500 turned out for Labour Day

Five hundred Society members turned out to celebrate Labour Day at events across Ontario.

Among the largest contingents were Toronto, Hamilton and Port Elgin. Society members also flew the union’s flag at Labour Day events in other communities, including Durham.

At the Toronto parade more than 300 people – most in purple t-shirts with this year’s theme, Time for change, our future depends on it – marched with The Society across Queen Street and into the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. Accompanied by a marching band playing new and classic pop covers, the day was enjoyed by members, their families and retirees.

Bruce Power LVP Mike Gade said that his favourite part of the Port Elgin Labour Day festivities, where more than 25 Society members attended, was the families that participated.

“I think every member brought out at least one family member,” said Gade. “It really speaks to the roots of the labour movement, where it’s about making life better for families and their communities, not just individual workers.”
