The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) was established in 1999 with the mandate to enhance public electrical safety in Ontario.

ESA is a delegated administrative authority, an independent, not-for-profit corporation acting on behalf of the Government of Ontario with specific responsibilities for electrical safety. As part of its mandate, ESA administers regulation in four areas: the Ontario Electrical Safety Code; licensing of Electrical Contractors and Master Electricians, electricity distribution system safety and electrical product safety. ESA also adminsters the Appeals Regulation.

ESA’s vision is an Ontario free of electrical fatalities and serious injury, damage, or loss.

Activities of ESA include:

  • Identifying and targeting leading causes of electrical risk;
  • Raising awareness, educating, and training in electrical safety;
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations; and
  • Investigating fatalities, injuries and fire losses associated with electricity.
