The Society participated in two key leadership forums for the nuclear industry this month.
The Society sent a delegation to the annual Canadian Nuclear Workers Council convention in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan earlier this month. The council is comprised of unions and associations that represent workers in all aspects of the nuclear industry, including mining, generation and end of life.
The CNWC convention was largely focused on addressing how the industry will adapt when Pickering goes offline in 2020, and ensuring that key refurbishment projects are approved in Ontario.
Attendees were taken on a tour of Saskatchewans McClean Lake uranium mine. Society representatives were impressed by the mines use of automation to limit the contact miners have with uranium, which contains radiation.
The Society also hosted two dozen nuclear industry leaders in its Toronto office for the Canadian Nuclear Associations board of directors and executive committee meetings on September 25.
The CNA is a broad industry association that includes both corporate and labour perspectives. Like CNWC, CNA is focused on the need to gain public and government support for refurbishment of both Ontario Power Generation and Bruce Power reactors.
Society President Scott Travers is a member of the CNA board, which is led by Dr. John Barrett. Among attendees were Bruce Power CEO Duncan Hawthorne and OPG Chief Nuclear Officer Glenn Jager.
