OPG to decommission Lambton GS

Ontario Power Generation announced that it will commence the decommissioning process for the Lambton Generating Station. The November 22, 2016 announcement cited cost cutting and flat energy demand as the reasons for decommissioning.

Lambton GS opened in 1970 using coal to generate, at its peak, 1,976MW. As part of the Ontario government’s commitment to end coal generation in the province, units one and two were shutdown in October 2010 with units three and four coming offline in September 2013. Since 2013, the fate of Lambton GS has been uncertain with many hoping that the site would be converted to biomass or natural gas generation.

OPG expects 24 job losses as a result of the decommissioning. The Society will ensure that any member affected by this decision has their rights under the collective agreement respected.
