The Toronto Hydro Local held an information picket at three locations across the city that raised awareness about the concessions the company is demanding of Society members at the bargaining table.
The company is demanding that existing members sell out the next generation of workers by bargaining away their post-retirement health benefits completely and slashing maternity, parental and family leave rights.
Our unit has never had such a strong strike mandate, said Toronto Hydro Local Vice President Henry Quach. We are steadfast and united: we will not sell out the next generation of workers.
The local is comprised of 56 engineers who are integral to the city of Torontos power system. These workers build and maintain power vaults, polls and wires, oversee the operations of the power system, and help this booming city ensure that all of its new condominium and business towers can seamlessly plug in to the power grid.
The information pickets were stationed outside of three Toronto Hydro work places, including the companys head office in downtown Toronto. Members spoke with and distributed leaflets to passersby to educate them on the issues at the bargaining table.
We were heartened by the support we felt from our co-workers and the public, said VP Quach. And with all the media coverage we received, the company knows that our demands for a fair deal will be heard loud and clear.
